Relationship red flags reach new heights.

A 17-year-old girl is set to stand trial in China after she allegedly flew her 19-year-old boyfriend out to Thailand and took him to the Myanmar border where she sold him into slavery.

The man, referred to as Huang by news outlets, met the young girl, known as Zhou, at a billiards room in Guangzhou, a large Chinese city just North West of Hong Kong, in October of last year. Huang apparently fell madly in love with Zhou and quickly moved into her flat with her.

Zhou reportedly told Huang that her parents had investments all over the country and as he was unemployed she convinced him to seek a job in Myanmar where she claimed her family operated some businesses. Huang agreed and on February 2 they flew out to Thailand together. From there they went to the Myanmar border where they were picked up by an armed man who took Huang’s passport and phone.

Huang was able to convince Zhou to give him back his phone to play games while they drove wherever they were going, in reality he sent a discreet message to his family who then called the police back in China.

Zhou sold Huang for $14,000

Huang claimed that he was taken to a compound in Myanmar. Upon his arrival his head was shaved and he was trained by his captors to carry out telecoms fraud schemes. Meanwhile, Zhou was paid 100,000 yuan (roughly $14,000) for bringing Huang to the gang.

The ordeal lasted four months in total with Huang being subject to countless beatings due to his inability to swindle victims. His captors beat his waist with an iron stick and would slap his ears which ultimately resulted in him becoming deaf. The 19-year-old was forced to work 16-20 hours a day and lost over 10kg in weight over the course of his captivity.

A ransom was ultimately negotiated with the gang who demanded 350,000 yuan ($48,000) in exchange for Huang’s release. The money was eventually paid and the young man returned to China in June of this year. However, he’ll likely be scarred by the horrific events he was forced to endure for the rest of his life.

As for Zhou, the girl who traded her boyfriend’s life for a measly $14,000, she spent ten days travelling around Thailand, no doubt enjoying the newfound wealth she had just acquired. However, thankfully she was immediately arrested upon her return to China.

Zhou was set to stand trial in July but it has been postponed. The prosecution are having difficulty gathering evidence for the case due to the crime occurring in another country. Meanwhile, Huang’s sister expressed her shock at what Zhou was capable of saying, “This girl is only 17. Who could imagine she would do such evil things?”
