Sooraj Barjatya, the master of family entertainers, is ready to make another mark on cinematic history—and this time, the eternal Prem is going to be played by Ayushmann Khurrana.
After months of speculation, it has been confirmed that Ayushmann will begin shooting for Barjatya’s upcoming untitled romantic comedy film in November 2025, with his co-star Sharvari coming on by December.
The film has been described as a funny, touching journey into love and family dynamics within nuclear families—disrupting Barjatya’s iconic concept of the larger-than-life joint family films while maintaining his ability to be warm-hearted.

Ayushmann to Step Into the World of ‘Prem’
Ayushmann Khurrana has proven his acting chops just recently in a vampire comedy called Thama, and he is elated to step into the quintessential Rajshri world.
According to a source close to the project, the actor is excited to portray a modern twist on Prem that feels contemporary out of Barjatya’s creative universe.
“Ayushmann is looking forward to playing Prem on the big screen. The character is based in middle-class values but will be contemporary. This is a modern take on Barjatya’s universe.”
Sharvari Joins the Journey
Sharvari, who made a mark with Munjya and will soon be seen in Alpha, will be the leading lady opposite Ayushmann, and she is set to start shooting in December.
Production Timeline & Casting Vision
Sooraj Barjatya’s eighth film as director will be shot over a six-month schedule in the hopes of hitting theatres in the second half of 2026.
Currently, the film is in the ensemble casting phase, with Barjatya wanting to combine some veteran talent and newcomers to fit into his classic multi-generational storytelling.
“The casting is going strong. Like always, Sooraj sir is looking for actors who can bring a heart to character and not just faces,” the source says.
Barjatya has created iconic family dramas like Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, and Vivah, along with the more recent Uunchai.
His next film will incorporate humour, heart, and relatable familial challenges.
What’s Next for Ayushmann & Sharvari?
Ayushmann Khurrana has a busy slate coming up. Aside from Barjatya’s rom-com, he will also be in:
- Thama, a vampire comedy produced by Dinesh Vijan
- An untitled spy comedy for Karan Johar
