Director Josh Greenbaum Set to Make New CARE BEARS Movie for Warner Bros.

Filmmaker Josh Greenbaum Slated to Make New Care Bears Film

Josh Greenbaum has become involved with the making of an upcoming Care Bears movie which could be one of the first official theatrical releases to feature the beloved bears since the mid-1980’s.

Josh Greenbaum is the director behind humorous comedies such as Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and the adult-humored talking dogs movie, Strays. While he wouldn’t seem to be the first go-to person for another Care Bears movie, the filmmaker has been tapped to make such a picture although there’s no word yet on whether it’s going to be animation or live-action. Greenbaum is also well-known for the widely acclaimed recent Will Ferrell documentary, Will & Harper.

In 1985, The Care Bears Movie was released theatrically to healthy numbers at the time. With a $22 million box-office gross, it went on to spawn a sequel which only earned $8 million. Still, the bears have grown even more in popularity throughout the years and a fresh reboot is just what the franchise needs. Based on characters that were said to have originated from greeting cards, the bears each have distinct personalities which shine through in terms of what they hope to accomplish by spreading love and joy through caring for others.

Greenbaum shocked the movie establishment when his wildly funny Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar made a big “splash” upon its release during the pandemic. It didn’t get a significant theatrical release, but earned excellent reviews across the board and was a popular streaming hit. Greenbaum’s raunchy talking dog movie was too risky to be a box-office hit and only made less than $24 million domestically. However, Greenbaum is said to be working on a new Spaceballs film currently as well as a movie titled The Dink which will feature funnyman Ben Stiller. Greenbaum has received the most acclaim so far in his career for his work on Will & Harper.

Warner Bros. will be the studio developing the new Care Bears movie and a successful marketing strategy is very important to make these 1980’s heroes relevant again. That’s not to say they aren’t, indeed, still popular. People are wearing T-shirts featuring the popular bears all over the country to this day and products such as “Care Bears” slippers have been sold in department stores such as T.J. Maxx.

As Greenbaum’s Care Bears project develops more traction, FilmBook will reveal and cover more details surrounding the upcoming movie which is likely to be at least a partially animated film although once that fact is confirmed, it will help the movie make more sense in terms of who it will be marketed to– animated film audiences or live-action ones. With the recent live-action Lilo & Stitch taking over the box-office these days, the Care Bears could end up going the live-action route.
