Through our new video series, Reel Talk, we have introduced you to the City Council candidates for the upcoming New York City Primary Election. Before early voting begins on June 14th, here’s one last chance to get to know the people on your ballot.
Manhattan’s District 5 includes the Upper East Side’s Yorkville, Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill, Roosevelt Island, Midtown East and Sutton Place. There are two Democrats running: the incumbent, City Council Member Julie Menin, and Collin Thompson; in November, the winner will face off against Republican candidate Alina Bonsell.
Julie Menin
Over her first two terms as Council Member, seventeen of Menin’s bills have become law. She passed legislation that required hospitals to disclose prices, codified reproductive rights, and set New York City on a path to have universal childcare. If re-elected she is ready to keep fighting for New Yorkers.
Collin Thompson
An educator and public servant, Thompson wants to get back to basics: safe streets, reliable transit, affordable housing, and strong schools. He wants to hold repeat offenders accountable, improve mental health responses, and remove the bureaucratic obstacles that stop businesses from growing and thriving.
Alina Bonsell
Bonsell is from Yorkville; she has experience with real estate, marketing, and business development.
