Through our new video series, Reel Talk, we have introduced you to the City Council candidates for the upcoming New York City Primary Election. Before early voting begins on June 14th, here’s one last chance to get to know the people on your ballot.
The Bronx’s District 17 includes Concourse Village, Crotona Park East, East Tremont, Hunts Point, Longwood, Melrose, Morrisania, Port Morris, West Farms, North Brother Island, and South Brother Island. The District is currently represented by Rafael Salamanca Jr., There are four Democrats running: Antirson Ortiz, Freddy Perez Jr., Justin Sanchez and Elvis Santana. The winner will face-off against Republican candidate, Rosaline Nieves, and Conservative candidate, Marisol Duran, in November.
Antirson Ortiz
Current New York State Committeeman for the 85th Assembly District, Ortiz understands the importance of investing in afterschool programs, funding intervention and prevention programs, and bridging the gap between community and police. He wants to invest in affordable housing and homeownership opportunities, create better jobs, and empower opportunities for all.
Freddy Perez Jr.
Perez is the 1st vice chair of Community Board 1 and a Democratic District Leader in the South Bronx, and he gives back to his community through annual Christmas toy drives and turkey giveaways. He wants to fight for public safety, quality of life, and affordable housing.
Justin Sanchez
Sanchez is running on four words: “Clean the Damn Streets.” He plans to live up to this slogan by installing trash cans, tackling the opioid crisis, and getting kids back in schools.
Elvis Santana
Elvis Santana is a lifelong South Bronx resident who is looking to make positive change for his community by serving in the City Council. Elvis wants to put a stop to pollution, improve public health, and strengthen small business in the Bronx.
Rosaline Nieves
Nieves’ Linked In page lists them as the Republican District Leader of the 84th Assembly District.
Marisol Duran
