Aamir Khan Reveals He Was Fired From Shah Rukh Khan’s Darr

In a shocking and blunt admission, Aamir Khan has explained that he didn’t turn down Yash Chopra‘s 1993 thriller Darr, contrary to popular belief; he got fired from the film. Yes, Darr turned Shah Rukh Khan into a cultural force with his terrifying performance as an obsessive lover.

During the promotion for Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan mentioned the casting switch in a recent interview, during the general promotional cycle where he revealed the astonishing truth about the casting switch that changed the face of Bollywood cinema.

“I Said Yes To Darr. I Was Kicked Out” – Aamir’s Frank Admission

When asked why he rejected Darr, Aamir Khan quickly clarified the situation:

“Darr ko maine naa nahi bola tha, Darr ko maine haan bola tha. Mujhe Darr se nikala gaya tha.”

He said his exit occurred because he follows a tenet for any two-hero project that is to have a simultaneous narration so both actors know what is happening from the start. However, Yash Chopra didn’t want to do that, and he terminated Aamir.

“Everyone has their own style of doing things,” Aamir said. “But where there are 2 or more leads, I find a joint narration is important. This did not happen here, so I was not included.”

What Might Have Been: A Two-Khan Battle?

Aamir was not clear on whether he was being considered for Shah Rukh Khan‘s role or Sunny Deol‘s, but the idea of an SRK–Aamir throw-down in Darr back in 1993 certainly gets fans talking.

If Aamir played Kiran’s stalker or played the principled Sunil, Darr may have been entirely different. But in the end, fate intervened and allowed Shah Rukh’s menacing charm (and now legendary line “I love you, K-k-k-Kiran”) to become a career-defining moment.

Aamir Khan Prepares For Sitaare Zameen Par

His missing out on Darr is in the past; now he is looking to the future with his passionate drama Sitaare Zameen Par, which opens on 20 June 2025. Starring along with Genelia Deshmukh, Sitaare Zameen Par is a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par and looks at the world of children with special needs as seen through the prism of sport.

The trailer has already resonated with people, promising an uplifting narrative infused with humour, feelings, and messages about our society – the elements of Aamir’s storytelling heritage.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Aamir Khan’s story about Darr adds to the rich folklore of Bollywood casting. Although his principled resistance may have meant that he did not get the venerable classic he deserved, it did open the door for popular Hindi cinema’s nemesis, Shah Rukh Khan, to explode to new heights. The industry is filled with “what-ifs”, and this is one of those histories that keep people interested decades later.
