Film Review: OH, HI!: Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman Star in a Wild, Quirky and Enjoyable Comedy [Tribeca 2025]

Logan Lerman Molly Gordon Oh Hi

Oh, Hi! Review

Oh, Hi! (2025) Film Review from the 24th Annual Tribeca Film Festival, a movie directed by Sophie Brooks, written by Molly Gordon and Sophie Brooks and starring Molly Gordon, Logan Lerman, Geraldine Viswanathan, John Reynolds, David Cross, Polly Draper, Desmin Borges, Jimmy Gary Jr., Tabitha Lawing, Ruben Ortiz, Diana Irvine and Sabina Friedman-Seitz.

Filmmaker Sophie Brooks takes viewers on a wild and crazy ride with the offbeat and hysterical new comedy, Oh, Hi!. This movie starts off with a scenario that is totally bizarre then flashes back 33 hours or so to tell us how we got there to that particular moment. Molly Gordon, who co-wrote the film with Brooks, plays the quirky, but lovable, Iris who is enjoying her relationship with the seemingly quite nice Isaac (Logan Lerman) at the beginning of the story line featured here. This movie is really unpredictable with one bizarre plot twist after another and that makes it a truly original picture even if it sometimes can test the viewers’ patience at times as a few key plot points turn out to be weirder than was expected.

As Isaac and Iris take a trip together to enjoy each other’s company, they end up looking into staying at a place featuring “O High” in its town name (well at least according to a sign they see). If you watch the movie carefully, you can see Isaac is a bit of a flirt although it’s hard for Iris to notice at first. There’s a scene where Isaac gets a warm response from a lady selling strawberries. Isaac and “the strawberry lady” exchange some comments about each of them having beautiful eyes. Iris seems to get a little jealous and the sequence ends with Isaac accidentally running into her strawberry stand which leads to the couple having to buy an obscene about of strawberries which they put in their car’s back seat. Iris seems like a perfect and cultured young woman with Casablanca being her most cherished movie. Isaac reads a book as they sit together enjoying each other’s company and the pair humorously joke and flirt with one another. It seems like a perfect match.

As the plot develops, Isaac wants to handcuff Iris in bed for some kinky sex together. Iris, instead, suggests that Isaac wear the handcuffs during sex. That’s a proposal which Isaac accepts with consequences that must be seen and heard to be appreciated. Isaac, we learn, doesn’t seem to want to get involved in a long-term relationship with Iris and this angers her to the point where she takes some drastic actions, including getting a little too detailed in some revelations about her past to try to make Isaac want to stay with her.

Eventually, a couple of Iris’s friends, Max (Geraldine Viswanathan, who fits right in here) and Kenny (John Reynolds), arrive on the scene to try to help Iris who has gone too far by sort of kidnapping Isaac through her refusal to remove the handcuffs from his arms and feet. Max and Kenny try to assist Iris in putting together a spell that would make Isaac forget about the crazy situation Iris has them all immersed in.

Molly Gordon is sensationally appealing with charisma that makes it sort of implausible that Isaac would want to avoid a relationship with her at first. Still, Gordon gets a little more intense as the movie progresses and her off-the-rocker remarks about sex and dating, including a reference to Isaac having performed oral sex on her, make the story become a bit more believable.

Lerman is well-cast as the guy at the mercy of his new girlfriend. Lerman and Gordon have some believable romantic chemistry together that helps to keep the undeniably off-the-wall plot moving quickly which will certainly maintain the viewer’s interest. For those who think this story may be going in a different direction than it actually is, the movie is being billed as a romantic comedy so things won’t turn into a horror movie although this same premise could have gone in a different direction in another type of film.

Viswanthan is back at home in the genre that loves her after her miscasting in the star-studded Marvel film, Thunderbolts*. Reynolds has a few moments to shine as well. This movie is still ultimately Molly Gordon’s show from beginning to end despite the stellar support she has from all of her cast members. Gordon is a passionate actress who doesn’t shy away from difficult topics that the movie tackles in a humorous but thought-provoking fashion. Gordon’s acting and the work she put into the script, alongside Brooks’ sharp featured observations about life, makes it a perfect date movie that will inspire discussions afterwards.

Oh, Hi! is probably the wildest movie you’ll see this summer that isn’t an action or horror picture. It takes the romantic comedy to new heights with its clever barbs and beautifully orchestrated chemistry between Lerman and the incomparable Gordon. It has some thematic flaws here and there since it pushes the envelope a bit far at times, but it remains one of the most romantic movies you’ll see this summer.

Rating: 7/10
