The series follows Cadence Sinclair, a young woman from a wealthy family who spends her summers on a private island with her cousins and a close-knit group of friends known as the Liars. After suffering a mysterious accident, Cadence struggles to remember the events leading up to it. As she pieces together fragments of her past, she uncovers dark secrets and hidden truths that threaten to tear her family apart.
Emily Alyn Lind delivers a standout performance as Cadence, capturing the character’s vulnerability and determination with equal measure. Her chemistry with the rest of the cast, particularly Shubham Maheshwari, is palpable, making their relationships feel authentic and compelling. Overall, “We Were Liars” is a solid entry into the hazy summer melodrama canon, sitting comfortably beside other twisty, sun-soaked series like “Big Little Lies” and “Cruel Summer.” While it does get a little bogged down under its many subplots — and the cliffhanger ending feels almost like it was tacked on from one of the showrunners’ previous shows — it’s still a fun series, quick to binge and easy to digest, culminating in a sweeping bittersweet finale that will leave viewers emotionally satisfied, and maybe even in tears.
