The fans might have given up on Blade, but it seems Marvel hasn’t.
Next month it will have been six whole years since Marvel announced it was working on a Blade movie with Mahershala Ali starring as the titular vampire hunter. That was 2019, it’s currently 2025 and until now, we’ve had no news on the movie which seems to have gotten trapped in development hell.
The ‘Blade’ movie that never was
While many were initially excited to see Ali offer a new take on the role that excitement slowly eroded as the years went by. Now most fans just assume that the studio has simply given up on the project, after all, six years with no news you can hardly blame people for thinking the worst. Kevin Feige’s words last year also did very little to reassure anyone.
Last year also saw Wesley Snipes, the original live-action Blade, reprise his role for a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. At one point in the film Snipes’ character states “There’s only one Blade. There’s only ever going to be one Blade.” This not-so-subtle fourth dig at the Ali project seemed like the final nail in the coffin for the film that had so much potential but ultimately never was.
There’s still hope
But while many have finally accepted we’ll never get another Blade movie it turns out the studio may have been quietly putting pieces in place to get the ball rolling once again. While that sounds exciting, we’ll still have to wait until 2028, and that’s if everything goes according to plan.
According to an article from Variety, Disney has added a possible fourth movie to the Marvel release slate. The untitled project will apparently be coming to cinemas on December 15 of that year and it has been widely speculated the film will be the much anticipated Blade film, finally releasing almost ten years after it was originally announced.
If that really is the case then that’s a pretty long wait. We’ve got over three years until then! There’s also no confirmation as to whether Mahershala Ali is still attached to the project although it would be hard to blame him if he no longer wanted to be a part of it after Marvel’s embarrassing approach to the film’s release.
Fan reactions
There’s also a good chance the film won’t do very well. While there was a positive buzz back in 2019, superhero fatigue and a general lack of trust for Marvel projects nowadays might put a lot of fans off. Also that near ten year gap between announcement and release doesn’t bode well for the film either.
Fan responses on X seemed less than thrilled at the possibility of a new Blade film. One person wrote, “Has been “in the works” for a decade at least…not a good sign,” while another added, “As much as I love Blade, I don’t even care no more they ruined my excitement.”
Sadly it seems like the window of opportunity may have passed for this much beloved Marvel character. Only time will tell if Marvel can recapture that initial excitement when it finally does give us Blade on the big screen.
