The financial specifics are all subject to debate right now, but what is clear is that the wedding has used Bezos’ infinite wealth to ensure that the only people who will find the city hospitable this weekend will be his rich and famous friends.

The city, obviously, is not a fan of this. Europe is a proud place on our planet, full of very old cultures that don’t take kindly to disruption. It just serves to show people why the workers at Amazon get underpaid. It reminds people who are lectured about using straws what the richest people are actually doing with their private jets and endless resources. All the public posturing and space trips get kneecapped when people see stunts like this. This is not the flex it probably was planned as.

The details of this wedding suggest they were trying to mimic a royal wedding, where the whole world stops to see a celebration of love by people who represent a nation, a culture, and a specific way of life. But what does Jeff Bezos truly represent? Tax evasion? Is that what people are supposed to celebrate while they can barely afford the rising cost of goods and anxieties of an impending war?
