THE SOCIAL NETWORK PART II: A Sequel to 2010’s Oscar Bait Film to Be Written and Directed by Aaron Sorkin

The Social Network Set to Get a Sequel of Sorts

Aaron Sorkin is in the early stages of attempting to bring a follow-up movie to 2010’s The Social Network to the screen.

Sorkin will be making the upcoming film, The Social Network Part II, for Sony, the studio which released the original picture. That 2010 movie which premiered at the New York Film Festival was called the number one film of the year by the National Board of Review and went on to become one of the most acclaimed movies of the year in which it was released. It secured an Oscar nod for Best Picture but lost out on the prize to The King’s Speech.

Now, Aaron Sorkin wants to make a film in the same vein as the 2010 picture although it is not necessarily going to be a “direct” sequel to the first movie which ended with Jesse Eisenberg’s character waiting for the response to a friend request from a female character he yearned for. Sorkin’s new script will center around details from The Facebook Files from the Wall Street Journal. Those 2021 articles adequately expressed the darker side of Facebook.

Aaron Sorkin secured an Oscar for his work on the writing of the original The Social Network. Now, after the January 6th, 2021 U.S. Capitol storming, Sorkin is said to have sufficient evidence that Facebook played a role in the situation that occurred that day in early 2021. This will help give his new project a definitive edge that could make it one of the most talked about films of the year when it is eventually released.

David Fincher directed the original 2010 picture, but Sorkin will helm the upcoming project this time instead of Fincher. Sorkin also directed the 2021 highly controversial Nicole Kidman picture, Being the Ricardos, which was about the personal lives of Lucille Ball and the hard to live with love of her life.

Though the casting of the new film is not yet even close to being completed, some people believe that Jesse Eisenberg may not be a central part of it. Eisenberg has gone on to other things like starring in and directing last year’s gem, A Real Pain, but he still may want to take on the role of Mark Zuckerberg again if given the opportunity. After all, Eisenberg did receive an Oscar nomination for his work in the 2010 film. The big question mark is whether or not it would be a cameo or a juicier role if it does happen that Eisenberg was cast again. Then, there’s the matter of if Zuckerberg would even be seen in this “sequel” at all.

Those waiting to see if that friend request at the end of the original The Social Network was responded to may want to hope Sorkin answers that complicated dilemma in the sequel. Whether that request was answered is a question that has been lingering on viewers’ minds for about 15 years now.
