President Donald Trump appeared to contradict himself when talking about his “big, beautiful bill” on Wednesday.
In a meeting with moderate Republicans, Trump highlighted three programs not to be cut if the GOP wanted to win elections between 2026 and 2028: Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, according to NOTUS. Trump said the three areas should be “touched.”
According to three sources with direct knowledge of the conversation, Trump had to be told by one of the House members that the bill carried massive cuts to Medicaid.
“But we’re touching Medicaid in this bill,” one House member responded to Trump.
When to comment on the exchange, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told NOTUS that the bill “takes decisive action to protect Medicaid, for generations to come by eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse in the program. President Trump is committed to protecting Medicaid for the vulnerable Americans who rely on it most.”
According to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office, the bill’s cuts to social welfare programs will result in approximately 17 million Americans losing health coverage. On Tuesday, the Senate passed the bill, sending it back to the House for a final vote. Trump called the Senate’s approval “music to my ears.”
