Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases
The home releases of Sinners, Fallout, See, Clueless, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin are the most noteworthy releases (and pre-orders) on home video and streaming services this week.
FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Sinners and had this to say about the film:
Coogler has crafted a virtual masterpiece through a vision that hits the bullseye every time. Costumes that are presented here alongside the set design (including the performers’ outfits and use of color schemes) enhance the world-building immensely and are near perfect…Vampire movies are always a horror film fanatic’s favorite type of scary movie, but Sinners blows away the competition

FilmBook Editor in chief Rollo Tomasi reviewed Episodes 1-3 of See and had this to say about the TV series:
Watching a society built around having no sight, having never seen the world in which they inhabit, is immensely fascinating. This plot element alone draws the curious viewer in, because the viewer wants see to how humanity has learned to cope with blindness in a rural, de-industrialized world.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed The Amateur and had this to say about the film:
Matt Damon used to do those Bourne movies and the filmmakers are probably hoping this will be Malek’s ticket to future Amateur pictures, but alas, The Amateur lives up to its title and is “amateur night” when compared to the far superior The Bourne Identity.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed Karate Kid: Legends and had this to say about the film:
Karate Kid: Legends was a perfectly fine way to bring the franchise back to life, but it is slight in terms of possessing substantial complexity in the themes it presents. Never mind, though, because the fight scenes are quick and tight while Chan and Macchio have a blast representing the earlier entries in the long-lasting franchise.

FilmBook Writer Thomas Duffy reviewed The Phoenician Scheme and had this to say about the film:
The Phoenician Scheme is a winner, but a moderate one. It’s pretty slight at times, but it eventually has substance if you make it all the way to the end. I wish I could love Anderson every time he makes a movie and up until now, I think I always did. This time out, I just liked his picture for its ambitions rather than for its attempt at a respectable plot.

FilmBook Editor in chief Rollo Tomasi reviewed Episode 1 of Manifest and had this to say about the TV series:
Throughout Pilot, the viewer is enthralled, finding it almost impossible to turn from what is unfolding for two reasons: 1.) the promos for the series were well-executed, instilling in the viewer the need to find out where the plane disappears to and what is happening, and 2.) the viewer hopes that the second and third acts of Pilot will be as good, if not better, than its beginning.
