WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!
Many fans of the 1997 slasher smash hit, I Know What You Did Last Summer, have been asking themselves that same thing in regard to when audiences will get a new chapter in the Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.) saga.
But we won’t have to wait much longer!
In anticipation of the new sequel from director Jennifer Kaytlin Robinson (Do Revenge) and Sony Pictures, Freddie Prinze Jr. sat down with PEOPLE to discuss his return to the beloved franchise.
28 years after appearing alongside a 90s heartthrob all-star team that included Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, Prinze (49) said, “Whatever a high school union feels like, that’s what it felt like.” He went on to mention what it felt like reuniting with his onscreen costar and love interest Jennifer Love Hewitt (46) by saying, “You have no idea what’s changed, what’s the same. You’re excited to show what you think you’re better at, you know what I mean? You hope they notice it. It was all those things.”
The dynamic duo last appeared together in the franchise in 1998 with the fun but ultimately disappointing direct sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, but Prinze thinks that their new work on the 2025 reboot is their best work in the series yet. “I know when we got together, they’re the best scenes that we’ve put on camera together, of any of the three movies.”
He goes on to praise the new installment further by saying, “I’m really proud of the work that Love and I got to do on screen. I think it’s the best work we’ve done in all three of the movies that we did together. And I don’t think it’s close.”
The new film features a fresh young cast, including Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King, and Tyriq Withers, who cover up a hit-and-run accident only to be stalked the following summer by a fisherman in a slicker. In what’s becoming a popular trope for legacy sequels, the kids seek guidance from original survivors of the 1997 event, Ray and Julie.
I Know What You Did Last Summer slashes into theaters July 18.
