The NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM Franchise is Getting Rebooted with New Characters

20th Century Studios to Reboot Night at the Museum

The Ben Stiller Night at the Museum series is getting an overhaul and will soon be rebooted for modern-day audiences.

The surprise 2006 smash hit, Night at the Museum, was a family movie that audiences loved. With the fun Keke Palmer song, “Tonight,” at the end credits and funnyman Ben Stiller in the leading role, the 2006 movie wowed audiences to the point that it received a solid “A-” CinemaScore grade. Critics were less kind and the Rotten Tomatoes score for the film now averages a mere 42% approval rating. The sequels to the 2006 movie both received “B+” CinemaScores. Shawn Levy directed the 2006 audience favorite movie and its two follow-up sequels and Levy will be producing the upcoming reboot for 20th Century Studios. Tripper Clancy will be writing the screenplay for the new reworking of the franchise.

Reboots are a funny thing. The recent Karate Kid reboot was a truly fun time at the movies, but the question always remains as to whether or not these reboots are absolutely necessary. With over $100 million in grosses worldwide, it becomes clear that Karate Kid: Legends had the muscle to please audiences. It also earned a respectable “A-” CinemaScore mark.

Night at the Museum earned a great $574 million worldwide and the sequels didn’t disappoint at the international box-office either. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, which was part two, made $413 million worldwide. 2014’s third entry in the series, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, petered out with a solid $363 million worldwide. After ten-plus years, Ben Stiller’s character in these movies has probably found a job outside of the museum so the new film will boost new characters. There were many Oscar-caliber performers associated with the previous Night at the Museum films, including the likes of Amy Adams and the terrific Robin Williams.

Dick Van Dyke is 99-years-old and had a role as a security guard in the 2006 Night at the Museum movie. Van Dyke moved and grooved to Palmer’s “Tonight” during the end credits while mopping a floor. It would be nice to see Van Dyke get a cameo in the new reboot and, perhaps, to see Ben Stiller in, at the bare minimum, a cameo in the new picture. Owen Wilson also stole the show in the earlier films so it would be great to see him on board in a bit part too. Unfortunately, these three legendary actors will probably cost a lot to hire so the new reboot may have to create new and memorable characters. It should certainly try to win over critics as well as audiences this time around.
