Robert Eggers is diving back into the world of horror, and he may be bringing back some familiar faces with him. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who appeared in Eggers’ haunting vampire tale Nosferatu, is in talks to reunite with the director for a new supernatural project titled Werwulf. Lily-Rose Depp, the breakout lead of the 2024 gothic thriller, is also in early talks to join the hairy new chapter.
This time around, Eggers is exploring lycanthropy, helming a werewolf-themed feature based on a screenplay he co-authored with Icelandic writer and frequent collaborator Sjón. They last teamed up for 2022’s epic saga The Northman. The horror film is already eyeing Christmas Day 2026 for its North American release.
Focus Features, which helped bring Eggers’ vision of Nosferatu to screens with major success, is once again financing the picture. The studio has supported each of his films so far, including The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, with global distribution managed by Universal International.
Nosferatu reinterprets the 1922 silent masterpiece by F. W. Murnau, placing Depp in the role of Ellen Hutter, a woman ensnared by the dark obsession of Count Orlok, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård. Taylor-Johnson took on the part of Friedrich Harding, a man who doubts the existence of vampires until it’s far too late. The star-packed cast also featured Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe. Released over the 2024 holiday season, the film opened with a staggering $40 million debut and eventually scared up more than $181 million worldwide.
Taylor-Johnson has kept busy, most recently appearing in the apocalyptic sequel 28 Years Later. His filmography also includes Kraven the Hunter, The Fall Guy, Bullet Train, Tenet, Nocturnal Animals, and Godzilla.
Depp, meanwhile, has built an eclectic résumé with performances in Wolf, Silent Night, Voyagers, The Dancer, The King, and HBO’s controversial drama series The Idol.
