Man charged in killing of ‘American Idol’ music supervisor and husband

LOS ANGELES —A man was charged Thursday with murder and burglary counts in the fatal shootings of “American Idol” music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband in their Los Angeles home last week, the district attorney’s office said.

Raymond Boodarian, 22, could face life in prison in the July 10 shooting deaths of Kaye and her husband, Thomas Deluca, both 70, after the couple returned home while he was burglarizing the residence, officials said.

Kaye, who has been with “American Idol” since 2009, and her husband were found dead in their Encino home on Monday after police conducted a welfare check and found blood at the door, Los Angeles police said.

Prosecutors allege they were shot on July 10 after they returned home from the grocery store to find Boodarian inside the home.

“In a matter of moments, this couple was senselessly killed in their own home as they returned from the grocery store,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement.

Boodarian is believed to have entered the home at 4 p.m. through an unlocked door, officials said.

Boodarian was arrested Tuesday, police said. He appeared in court Thursday for an arraignment, which was postponed until Aug. 20.

Records show Boodarian was represented by the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. It did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Boodarian was being held without possibility of bond, jail records showed.

Police were called to the couple’s home on the day of the burglary and murder for a report of a possible burglary, but officers didn’t see any evidence of a crime, the police department has said.

The person who requested Tuesday’s welfare check did so after having not heard from one of the residents for several days, police said.

The case remains under investigation, officials said. Police said this week that they were trying to determine whether there was any connection between Boodarian and the couple.

Boodarian is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree burglary, but the charges are with special allegations, like multiple murder, that would increase a possible sentence.

Last year, Boodarian was charged with battery, displaying a weapon and making threats, according to court records. A judge dismissed the case in December after hearings concerning mental health and evaluations, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Encino is a neighborhood in the San Fernando area of Los Angeles.
