Third Spider-Verse Film Delayed Three Weeks
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse‘s release date has been delayed from June 4, 2027 to June 25th, 2027 in order to accommodate movie-going audiences getting out of school later in June that year.
Sony’s third entry in the epic animated Spider-Verse franchise just shifted its release date back a few weeks in order to hopefully enjoy more summer box-office dollars. The hero of the movie, Miles Morales, is appealing to school age young kids so Sony is hoping to bank on that popularity of Miles and the franchise by releasing it at the end of June right before the fourth of July box-office dollars are available to chew into.
Most recently, F1: The Movie and Jurassic World: Rebirth cleaned up at the box-office coming before or around July 4th. F1:The Movie particularly enjoyed the late June slot this year which translated into big dough for the race-car picture. Jurassic World: Rebirth was even stronger and then, of course, Superman is also now a box-office juggernaut opening just several days after July 4th. Late June/early July is when you want to open a blockbuster like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, not early June as was originally planned.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the predecessors of the upcoming film, both enjoyed healthy runs at the domestic and international box-offices. A cliffhanger of an ending led the second chapter to get just an “A” CinemaScore instead of an “A+” like the first film in the animated movie franchise. While a “cliffhanger” was a great idea to end the second picture on, some viewers felt that waiting for years to see what happens next was a bit unfair. Other than that, audiences loved both previous pictures with a passion.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse didn’t win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars like the first picture in the series did. That cliffhanger may have been to blame, but with $690 million in worldwide ticket sales, the producers did more than OK on Across the Spider-Verse. It was, of course, at least nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards though, in a big upset, it lost to The Boy and the Heron.
Buds from Sony Animation also has a new release date as well. That highly anticipated animated movie is now due March 12, 2027. Industry insiders predict that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will have reach beyond the audience the last film had and will score major box-office dollars and a sure-fire Oscar nod for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars with its newly secured release date. A win is most likely probable given the time put into this latest animated adventure which will again co-star the voice talents of “sinner” Hailee Steinfeld and, in addition, Nic Cage among others.
