From star-kid launches to performance-driven storytelling, the Dhadak journey reflects Bollywood’s evolving romance template. Dhadak (2018) marked the Hindi debut of Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter.
Released on July 20, 2018, Dhadak introduced Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter to mainstream Hindi audiences. Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Dharma Productions, the romantic drama was a Hindi adaptation of the Marathi blockbuster Sairat. While the remake toned down the original’s gritty realism, Dhadak found commercial success in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. It grossed over ₹110 crore worldwide and became known for its chart-topping music, including Zingaat, Pehli Baar, and the title track.
The film also played a pivotal role in launching two fresh faces from well-known film families. Janhvi, daughter of the late Sridevi, and Ishaan, half-brother of Shahid Kapoor, became instant headline-makers. Their on-screen chemistry received praise, though the film sparked ongoing debate about the creative compromises made during adaptation.
Dhadak 2 trailer introduces Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in a grounded, intense love story
Seven years later, Dharma is returning to the franchise with Dhadak 2, a spiritual sequel, both films exploring themes of love, caste, and societal opposition, but with different casts and storylines. Directed by Shazia Iqbal, the film stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in a raw, socially charged love story set against the backdrop of caste and class tensions.
The official trailer, released earlier this month, has received a strong response for its gritty visual tone, haunting background score, and emotionally layered performances. The set up and pairing are setting the internet buzzing, with fans appreciating the film’s unfiltered approach to forbidden love.
Audiences and critics alike noted how Dhadak 2 feels like a thematic upgrade, moving from class divide to caste divide. Dhadak 2 also underwent significant censorship, with 16 cuts and modifications to address caste-based discrimination.
Bas Ek Dhadak song earns praise for its nostalgic, emotional vibe
The first song from the film, Bas Ek Dhadak, dropped on July 16 and has already struck a chord with listeners. Sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Jubin Nautiyal, the ballad leans into classic Bollywood melody while showcasing Siddhant and Triptii’s understated chemistry.
Fans have described it as “goosebump-inducing” and “a return to pure, soulful love songs.” The visuals offer glimpses of unspoken longing, reinforcing the film’s emotional texture. Critics have called the track a standout, one that holds its own next to the iconic title track of Dhadak (2018).
The Dhadak franchise holds significance in real world of romance
The Dhadak franchise, though unconventional in its structure, reflects a rare evolution. While the first film launched newcomers from film families in a polished romantic tragedy, the sequel brings in self-made actors with proven depth and nuance. From Gully Boy and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan to Bulbbul and Animal, both Siddhant and Triptii represent a newer, grittier generation of Bollywood leads.
Dhadak 2, remake of Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal (2018), is tapping into a more mature space. It retains the theme of intense young love but reframes it by exploring the themes of caste-based discrimination and societal barriers to love, similar to the original Tamil film.
As audiences evolve, so do their expectations and it looks like Dhadak 2 is ready to meet them.
