Battles over soggy fairways up as Valley leg unfolds

Angelo Que is bringing in his playing attire for the first two rounds of the P2 million ICTSI Valley Golf Challenge in Antipolo that tees off on Tuesday, that’s in case they are asked to stay in the complex—or somewhere near it—should the weather take a turn for the worst and players are stranded.

“I have to be prepared,” the many-time Asian Tour winner, seeking a third circuit win this season, told the Inquirer after playing in the Pro-Am on Monday morning in super wet conditions. “Just in case we get stuck there, I’ll have an outfit to play the second round in.”

Que is one of the favorites in the 72-hole championship, and he said that winning will demand a lot from anyone regardless of how many rounds are played.

“It’s really difficult. Not only has the course gotten longer, but the simple task of walking it is a grind,” Que said. “It will take a lot out of anyone physically.”

Que said that the greens of the hilly South course have held up remarkably well. The only problem is how to get there on the spots that the players want considering that they will be hitting from soggy fairways each time.

Antonio Lascuña, the defending Order of Merit champion, Guido van der Valk, seeking to win a second straight tournament, and young guns Aidric Chan and Carl Corpus, fresh from Asian Development Tour wins in Morocco, are the other players to watch in the men’s event.

Meanwhile, a lean but talented 24-strong field will be seeing action in the P750,000, 54-hole ladies event where the likes of Chanelle Avaricio and Mafy Singson are fancied.

A late entrant is Daniella Uy, who is fresh from stints in the Taiwan tour. She seeks a first win this season after winning last year in Bacolod and at Forest Hills and Del Monte in 2023.

Singson has happy memories of the South course, having won here as an amateur in 2023. She broke through as a pro earlier this year. INQ
