The internet is buzzing over Mohit Suri’s latest film, Saiyaara, but not just for its box office performance. The real story going viral is the audience itself. Videos showing fans crying uncontrollably, fainting in their seats, and even one person attending a screening with an IV drip have taken social media by storm.
While many see it as a powerful testament to the film’s emotional impact, a wave of online skepticism has followed. Accusations have flown, with many claiming the emotionally-charged fans were planted by the filmmakers as a clever marketing gimmick. Now, the producer is setting the record straight.
YRF Responds To The Controversy
In a recent interaction, Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani, whose company produced the film, directly addressed the accusations. He confirmed the reactions are completely authentic. “None of those people were planted in theatres,” Widhani stated, refuting the claims. “Whether it’s the person on a drip, the one yelling at the screen, or the guy who took off his shirt and danced – these are genuine fans reacting with real emotions.”
Widhani added that the raw emotional connection is precisely what the team hoped to achieve. “It’s funny when you start receiving calls from people telling you how much they cried, and you’re actually thanking them for it,” he shared. “You find yourself saying, ‘We’re happy you cried,’ because that’s the kind of emotional connection Mohit has managed to create.”
The Vision Behind Saiyaara
The film’s deeply emotional core was intentional. Director Mohit Suri, in a recent interview, explained that he consciously moved away from big-budget action after his 2022 film, Ek Villain Returns, didn’t meet expectations. He felt the industry was saturated with spectacle and decided to pursue a more intimate project instead. “I decided to make a romantic musical with newcomers,” Suri said, which led him to develop Saiyaara and ultimately partner with YRF.
