Dave Franco only trusts the best in the business.
Dave Franco is out on the promotional run of his well-reviewed horror film Together alongside his frequent collaborator, real-life wife Allison Brie. But another potential movie is slowly surfacing during his interviews: the much-discussed Luigi Mangione biopic.
Luigi Mangione grew into international infamy when he was accused of shooting the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Since then, a lot has come out about Mangione. Childhood friends have done interviews and talked about how Mangione was when he was young. More details of how he might have done the crime have also been released. And there was even a manifesto that was leaked to a reporter that talked about Mangione’s alleged motives and issues with health insurances.
A lot of people following up on the story immediately started calling for a biopic before the case even started. Mangione has since pleaded not guilty, and the idea of the show might be premature — but still, fans had already picked their Luigi: Dave Franco. Franco already revealed when he was at Sundance Film Festival that he’s never been reached about any one particular thing by his friends in his life.
People reports that Dave Franco, this time on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, had the question of portraying Mangione come up again. It was during a segment on the show where callers could ask the star questions about anything they want. The final caller wanted to know whether Franco would consider doing the film.
Franco responded with his one condition for Hollywood, “This is something that more people in my life reached out about — this exact thing — than anything else that has ever happened. Let’s just say I’m open, if the right people [are involved], and let’s leave it at that.”
Franco right now is riding high on yet another low-budget independent production with Together. And considering that 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and that gripping trailer on YouTube, it seems he’s at a stage of his career where he values the filmmakers involved more than anything else. Of course, Ryan Murphy could also take this story and adapt it for television instead.
Murphy right now is working on the biopic of John F. Kennedy Jr. for his American Crime Story spin-off, American Love Story. By the time he finishes up with the show, he would be primed to take over another mini-series about people who would turn to murder to solve their problems.
We’d have to wait and see. In reality, if trends are anything to go by, Murphy has shown he prefers adapting crime stories that happened in the 1990s or earlier. But a story this big — he is bound to consider making an exception.
Saturday Night Live has already made a sketch that made fun of Dave Franco’s resemblance to Mangione. The zeitgeist has seemingly already decided that he’s the person they want to see embody that role. Now, whether they can produce a script for him that’s a little bit nuanced and informative — that’s a different question. As for now, he’s still enjoying the afterglow of his well-regarded performance.
Together is in some cinemas now. Check your local listing.
