A ‘Kohinoor’ Level Win – Director Says Rani Mukerji’s National Award Was ‘Destined’, Calls Her and SRK ‘Irreplaceable’

The Indian film industry is celebrating as Rani Mukerji took home the Best Actress award at the 71st National Film Awards for her powerful performance in Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway. Following the momentous win, the film’s director, Ashima Chibber, shared her overwhelming pride and joy, revealing just how confident she was in her leading lady.

In a recent interview, Chibber explained that the win felt like a validation for the entire team and that the collaboration between her and Rani was destined for greatness.

“It Was Cosmic”

Ashima Chibber revealed she had an intuitive feeling about the victory. “When the script and actor are married, magic happens,” she told India Today. “Even before the announcement, I messaged her, ‘Party kidhar hai?’ because I was so confident.” For a director, she explained, an actor’s win is the ultimate validation of everyone’s collective hard work.

She felt the win was written in the stars for Rani. Recalling her conversation with the actress after the announcement, Chibber said, “I told her it was cosmic or something bigger than that. This award had her name written all along.”

Rani Was Always The First Choice

The director confirmed that Rani Mukerji was the one and only choice for the role of the determined mother fighting for her children. “When I read it, I could only see her,” Chibber stated, adding that she wanted to see Rani explore emotions the world hadn’t yet seen from her. She also praised the actress’s sharp intellect, calling her “one of the most intelligent actors we have… razor sharp, like a blade.”

Chibber noted that Rani’s performance resonated globally, with messages pouring in from different countries. “It’s an accomplishment for an actor to portray a role in such a way that it crosses boundaries, borders, generations, and lifetimes,” she said.

The ‘Kohinoors’ of the Industry

When asked about the significance of both Rani and Shah Rukh Khan winning their first National Awards for acting after such long and illustrious careers, the director was effusive in her praise. “It’s late, but not too late. This is a huge recognition for both of them,” she shared. “They are the pillars of our industry. And who’s replacing them? They can’t be. These people are like Kohinoors.”
