US tourist, 63, attacked by shark & airlifted to hospital in Bahamas after being mauled while spearfishing

AN AMERICAN tourist was left with severe injuries after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing.

The horror incident took place in the Bahamas on Sunday, according to authorities.

The 63-year-old man was mauled by the beast at around 1pm near Big Grand Cay.

He sustained “severe injuries”, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

The tourist was taken local clinic for medical treatment, after which he was airlifted to the US for further help.

The full extent and nature of his injuries is not known.

A police statement reads: “Police on the island of Abaco responded to a shark attack that occurred shortly after 1pm on Sunday 17 August 2025, near Big Grand Cay.

“Initial reports suggest that a 63-year-old resident of the USA was spearfishing when he was attacked by a shark, sustaining severe injuries.

“He was taken to the local clinic for medical assistance before being airlifted to the United States for additional treatment.”

While sharks do roam the waters of the Caribbean, attacks on humans are relatively rare.

According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been just 34 confirmed shark attacks in the Bahamas over the past 400 years.

Elsewhere, a seven-year-old boy was attacked by a 13ft shark who ripped off part of his leg.

The kid had been playing with a group of 10 friends in shark infested waters when the beast grabbed hold of his body.

This horrifying incident happened in Taiohae Bay, Nuku Hiva.

The child had one of his calves ripped off in the shocking attack.

He was treated at the scene before being rushed to a local hospital in French Polynesia.
