MANILA, Philippines—A new battleground for 3×3 basketball will open this weekend with the launch of the Pilipinas United 3×3 League.
Spearheaded by champion coach Eric Altamirano and co-founder Andrew Combate, the two-day event features games in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

“Purpose brings us together to create new avenues for athletes to unite communities and to push Philippine basketball to even greater heights,” said Altamirano during a press conference on Monday.
Battling out in the men’s division are local squads Half Court Group (Hoopjeep), Sidney Onwubere’s YouGuard, David Carlos’ Activate Sports, AMG Physical Therapy Clinic, Smile 360 Dental Clinic, Solaris, Taho Story B and Taho Story A, which parades celebrity David Licauco.
Spicing up the competition are international teams in Ninja Airs and SBB of Japan, Dame Dolla of Vietnam, and Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia.

The champion takes home $5,000 while spots are also up for grabs in the Fiba 3×3 Kaohsiung Challenger in October.
The top local team also qualifies for the Fiba 3×3 Manila Challenger in September.
In the women’s division, rising star Kacey Dela Rosa will spearhead the Gilas Pilipinas U23 against tough opposition in Uratex Dream and Pilipinas Aguilas.
