Bollywood legends Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty recently appeared on The Great Indian Kapil Show, where they shared stories about their long friendship and careers. During the episode, host Kapil Sharma asked why multi-starrer films, which were common in their time, are rarely made today. Both veteran actors agreed that the issue stems from insecurity among the current generation of stars.
Sanjay Dutt pointed out that in his prime, there was no insecurity when working with legends like Dilip Kumar and Shammi Kapoor. He emphasized that actors back then focused on making the film better, even if it meant exchanging lines. Suniel Shetty agreed, adding, “There was an appreciation for each other.”
Sanjay Dutt On New Actors And Insecurity
Sanjay Dutt didn’t hold back his thoughts on the new crop of actors. He stated, “I think there is too much insecurity today.” He criticized the attitude of some newcomers who achieve quick fame, saying, “With just one hit, new actors go crazy, but I challenge them to survive in this industry for 40 years.”
Dutt also questioned the negative competition within the industry today, asking, “What enmity do we have internally that we wish the other’s films don’t work? All films should work. The more humble you are, the further you’ll go.”
Suniel Shetty Recalls Learning From Seniors
Suniel Shetty supported Dutt’s point by sharing his own experience. He recalled that after his debut film Balwan became a hit, critics called him a “wooden actor” and suggested he return to his family’s restaurant business. Shetty admitted he had no formal acting training at the time.
He explained that he learned how to act by observing his seniors because the environment was supportive. “I would look up to Sanjay, Jackie Shroff, Govinda, and Sunny Deol. I had my heroes whom I took inspiration from because there was no insecurity. I learned acting from them,” Shetty said. He contrasted this with today, suggesting that the “virtual world has left them very scared.”
