Thama, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, is set to be one of the biggest releases this Diwali. While the excitement for the horror-comedy is building, there’s one big question that has the entire industry talking: when will it actually release? With about a month to go, the final release date is still under wraps.
According to trade sources, the makers at Maddock Films are currently deciding between three strategic dates: Friday, October 17; Tuesday, October 21 (Diwali); and Wednesday, October 22. Each option comes with its own set of pros and cons.
Option 1: The Pre-Diwali Release (Oct 17)
The first option is to release the film on Friday, October 17, during the pre-Diwali week. Traditionally, the days leading up to Diwali are considered slow for the box office, as people are busy with festive preparations. However, this trend has been challenged recently.
Hollywood blockbusters like Black Adam and Venom – The Last Dance have performed very well despite releasing in this pre-festival period. While those films targeted a specific multiplex audience, a film like Thama has a much wider reach. Still, with producer Dinesh Vijan’s famous “golden touch,” a pre-Diwali release could be a smart move to get a head start.
Option 2: The Diwali Day Release (Oct 21)
The second, and perhaps the boldest, option is to release the film on Tuesday, October 21, which is the main day of Diwali. Most big films avoid releasing on Diwali itself because families are often busy with Laxmi Pujan, which can affect ticket sales. The holiday after Diwali is usually considered the golden day for collections.
However, releasing on Diwali would show immense confidence in the film. If the movie gets great reviews on the festival day, the positive buzz could lead to an explosive collection on the post-Diwali holiday. It’s a high-risk, high-reward strategy. Interestingly, the other Diwali release, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, is also slated to release on this day.
Option 3: The Post-Diwali Release (Oct 22)
The third and safest option is to follow the tried-and-tested formula: release the film on Wednesday, October 22, the day after Diwali. This is a massive public holiday across India, and audiences are in a festive mood and ready to go to the movies. This strategy guarantees a huge opening day number by taking full advantage of the holiday spirit without any of the risks associated with a Diwali-day release.
As of now, the suspense continues. The final decision will not only shape the box office journey of Thama but will also set the stage for the big festive clash.
