The mutiny the POTUS didn’t expect.

A civil war has already broken out among the right-wing influencers over Charlie Kirk’s death. While the Trump administration is using the tragedy to justify a crackdown on what they’re calling “hate speech,” some of the most influential voices in MAGA, including Candace Owens, Nick Fuentes, and Tucker Carlson, are pushing back hard, questioning the official narrative and the motives of the administration.

It’s honestly wild to see this happening. After the indictment of Tyler Robinson was released, which included what seemed to be a confession in a Discord chat, the MAGA world was united. Trump and his cabinet were ready to use this as a green light for a widespread purge of left-wing critics. However, that unity lasted less than a day.

According to The Verge, the cracks started to show soon after, and some of the most prominent, albeit further-right influencers, began questioning the very evidence that was being used to justify the crackdown. If you’ve read the chat chain, you know it sounds made up and too convenient. Unfortunately for Trump, everyone else sees it too.

The FBI’s chat log caused MAGA to turn on itself

Let’s start with Candace Owens. She’s been a big name on the right for a while, even though she was pushed out of groups like Turning Point USA and The Daily Wire. After the indictment came out, she started to question the evidence that seemed to prove the suspect, Tyler Robinson, was a leftist. In a statement to her followers, she said, “These messages are clearly doctored.”

She pointed out the lack of timestamps and the fact that large parts of the chat had been edited out, saying, “You have the right to be a little bit uncomfortable about that, because I am a lot a bit uncomfortable with that.” It’s a pretty bold move, and it’s something her large audience is definitely listening to.

Then there’s Nick Fuentes, an infamous white supremacist who has been feuding with Kirk for years over his pro-Israel stance. The Discord chats should have exonerated him and his followers from any blame, but he’s now questioning the evidence anyway. On a Rumble livestream, he broke down the chats in real time, saying that Robinson “is narrating the events and connecting one event to the next, and resolving all of the inconsistencies and discrepancies and questions, basically tying it up in a neat little bow.”

He thinks it’s all too convenient, designed to “wash away any doubts” and tie up the case neatly. Fuentes even went so far as to suggest, without any evidence, that this was all part of a larger Jewish conspiracy to eliminate Kirk and replace him with other figures like Ben Shapiro. It’s an insane theory, but it shows how quickly things are devolving.

Even Tucker Carlson, who’s a bit closer to the MAGA mainstream than Owens or Fuentes, has a big problem with how the Trump administration is handling all of this. While he didn’t question the evidence directly, he came out and savaged the administration for using Kirk’s death as a pretext to suppress free speech. After Attorney General Pam Bondi hinted that she would classify criticism of Kirk’s death as “hate speech” and FCC chairman Brendan Carr got Jimmy Kimmel ousted from his show, Carlson went on the attack.

“You hope that a year from now, the turmoil we’re seeing in the aftermath of his murder won’t be leveraged to bring hate speech laws to this country,” Carlson said. “And trust me, if it is, if that does happen, there is never a more justified moment for civil disobedience.” He didn’t stop there, either. He went after Bondi specifically, saying her “thinking that she just articulated is exactly what got us to a place where some huge and horrifying percentage of young people think it’s okay to shoot people you disagree with.”
