Aryan Khan‘s directorial debut, the Netflix series The Ba****ds of Bollywood, has become the new talk of the town, and it’s all because of its jaw-dropping finale. The series ends with a shocking revelation: the passionate love story between the protagonists, Aasmaan (Lakshya) and Karishma (Sahher Bamba), is turned on its head when they discover they are half-siblings.
This stunning twist has left audiences reeling, but for seasoned movie buffs, it might feel familiar. The show’s climax cleverly borrows from the playbooks of two iconic Indian films, blending classic suspense with modern-day controversy.
A Nod To The Legendary Suspense Of ‘Gupt’
The first and most direct tribute is to the 1997 cult classic, Gupt: The Hidden Truth. That film is legendary for its shocking final act, where the seemingly innocent heroine (Kajol) is revealed to be the killer. The Ba***ds of Bollywood follows a similar path of building suspense towards a game-changing secret.
In a brilliant meta-moment, the series even uses the song Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela from Gupt to unveil its big secret. In a flashback, Aasmaan’s mother, Neeta (Mona Singh), is shown as a background dancer in a film scene with superstar Ajay Talwar (Bobby Deol) 26 years ago, revealing he is Aasmaan’s biological father and making Karishma his half-sister.
Echoes Of The Controversial ‘Solo’ Playbook
While the suspense is inspired by Gupt, the specific nature of the twist feels like a page taken directly from Bejoy Nambiar’s 2017 anthology film, Solo. In the film’s final segment, the protagonist, played by Dulquer Salmaan, discovers that his lover is his half-sister, turning their romance into a taboo.
This is the exact same device used in The Ba***ds of Bollywood. Both stories use a late parentage reveal to reframe a love story as an incestuous relationship, leaving the characters and the audience in a state of shock and moral confusion. The twist in Solo was so controversial at the time that the film’s ending was even altered in some regions.
Satire Vs. Drama: A Twist With A Different Purpose
Though the plot device is the same, the two stories use it for different reasons. Solo used the twist for a dramatic, mythically-inspired conclusion about fate and obsession. In contrast, The Ba***ds of Bollywood uses the same shocking reveal as satire. The twist becomes a commentary on Bollywood’s own dynastic culture, hidden affairs, and scandalous legacies. It serves to explain the show’s title, where “bastards” metaphorically refers to the film industry’s hidden realities. By doing this, Aryan Khan doesn’t just shock the audience; he makes a bold statement about the world his series is set in.
