Mark your calendars: InDowncity is bringing back the beloved outdoor film series, “Movies on the Block” for Summer 2025. Each free event is open to the public and will take place at Grant’s Block park, located at 260 Westminster Street in downtown Providence, once a month on Thursdays, June 26, July 24, August 28, and September 25.
Here’s all you need to know about Movies on the Block!
How It All Started
Movies on the Block was Providence’s first outdoor film series, debuting seventeen years ago at Grant’s Block in 2008. The original organizers included InDowncity, members of the downtown small business community, and Cornish Associates (same as today). The series quickly gained popularity as a weekly series and even continued at other locations downtown when Cornish Associates began construction on Grant’s Block park. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the series was paused until its long-awaited return this summer.

Summer 2025 Screening Dates and Details
This summer, for the first time since 2019, Movies on the Block returns to the newly renovated Grant’s Block park on the corner of Westminster Street and Union Street in downtown Providence, RI. Screenings will take place outdoors at dusk (start times will vary according to sunset each month) and the film line-up is as follows: “Waiting for Guffman” on June 26; “Mermaids” on July 24; “Clue” on Aug. 28; and “The Wizard of Oz” on Sept. 25.
What to Expect at Movies on the Block
As always, Movies on the Block is free to attend and no tickets are required. Since seating is not provided, movie-goers are encouraged to bring blankets or beach chairs; space is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is predicted to fill up quickly. For enthusiastic movie-goers, themed costumes are encouraged. Picnicking is allowed and—as an exclusive offering for Movies on the Block—various downtown Providence restaurants will offer special to-go concessions close to the event footprint. As a note: unfortunately, this event is unable to accommodate pets at this time.
