Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 1999 classic, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, is celebrated for its epic romance and drama, but behind the scenes, the atmosphere was apparently just as intense. Actress Sheeba Chaddha, who made her film debut in the movie, recently opened up about her experience on the set, particularly her startling encounters with the film’s “temperamental” star, Salman Khan.
In a new interview, Chaddha recounted a shocking incident involving Khan’s on-set anger that brought the entire shoot to a standstill and left a lasting impression on the newcomer.
‘Is This How Stars Behave?’
Sheeba Chaddha recalled a day when something on set caused Salman Khan to trip. What followed was a sudden and intense outburst. “I remember him storming out of the set,” she explained. “He just stormed out of the set… He slammed the door, and there was a poor old lightman who got hit I think.” The incident was an eye-opener for the actress, who was new to the film world. “I remember thinking, ‘Baap re, is this how stars behave?’”
The shoot was abruptly halted as director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had to intervene and have a conversation with his furious star. Chaddha also mentioned another instance where Khan refused to hug her for a scene as required, again prompting the director to step in.
A Temperamental Co-Star
While describing Salman as “otherwise quite nice,” Chaddha clearly distinguished his on-set behavior from that of the director. Asked about Bhansali’s famously passionate nature, she clarified, “I don’t remember him ever losing it. I didn’t feel intimidated by him. But Salman, yes; he’s quite… temperamental.” Her account provides a fascinating glimpse into the power dynamics and high-pressure environment on the set of the blockbuster film. Despite the outburst, Chaddha maintained that it never affected her professional duty. “I had to do my job with complete sincerity and honesty,” she affirmed.
