Why would a rich person with dirt on the powerful get moved to a relaxed prison?

The recent move of Ghislaine Maxwell to a low-security prison camp in Bryan, Texas, is attracting a lot of attention, with a former federal prison official calling the transfer highly unusual. Maxwell, the convicted sex trafficker and associate of Jeffrey Epstein, was transferred from a federal prison in Florida to the Bryan facility, though neither the Bureau of Prisons nor her lawyers has given an official reason for the move.

The place where Maxwell is now being held is the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, a women-only facility that mainly houses inmates convicted of non-violent, white-collar crimes. Other well-known prisoners there include Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and reality TV star Jen Shah, per Fox News. The setup at FPC Bryan has been described as more relaxed, with dormitory-style housing instead of traditional prison cells.

Judi Garrett, a former assistant director at the Federal Bureau of Prisons, has spoken publicly about the transfer, confirming that it is very rare. Garrett said, “I am sure there were more than one, but it was very rare, and it required a tremendous amount of work to convince us at the Bureau of Prisons that that information initially contained in the pre-sentencing investigation report was somehow inaccurate, mischaracterized, etc.”

Even prison officials don’t know why Maxwell was moved

Garret continued, “Being that camps are minimum security, the notion is we don’t have fear that the people are going to run off because they are unrestricted essentially. You could leave whenever you want, there’s no fence. We don’t fear that you are gonna harm one another, and we don’t have fear that you are going pose any kind of risk to the community. Minimal staffing so that people are not watching you all the time, supervising you all time.”

Dave Aronberg, a former State Attorney in Palm Beach County, also described the new prison as having dormitory-style housing instead of cells. This matches the overall description of the facility as a more relaxed and less restrictive environment.

The timing of Maxwell’s transfer is also noteworthy. It happened soon after she met with the Deputy Attorney General in a Florida courthouse to discuss her role in finding underage girls for Epstein.
