“Critical: Between Life and Death” is a gripping and intense docuseries that offers an unfiltered look into the high-stakes world of London’s Major Trauma System. Directed by Jermaine Blake, this series provides an intimate portrayal of the relentless efforts of medical professionals as they navigate life-and-death situations daily. The narrative is both compelling and educational, shedding light on the chaotic yet meticulously organized environment of trauma care.
The series follows the journey of various medical staff, including paramedics, surgeons, and nurses, as they deal with critical emergencies. The documentary does an exceptional job of capturing the raw emotions and high-pressure decisions that come with treating severely injured patients. The use of over 40 embedded cameras across different trauma centers in London adds a layer of authenticity and immediacy to the storytelling.
One of the standout aspects of “Critical: Between Life and Death” is its ability to humanize the medical staff. Viewers get to see the personal and professional challenges faced by these healthcare heroes, making their triumphs and struggles deeply relatable. The series does not shy away from showing the gruesome reality of trauma care, which might be difficult to watch for some viewers but is essential in conveying the gravity of the situations.
However, the series occasionally falls into the trap of over-dramatization, a common pitfall in documentary filmmaking. While the intent is to highlight the intensity of the situations, it sometimes feels forced and detracts from the genuine moments of tension and relief that naturally occur in such a high-pressure environment. Despite this, the series remains a powerful testament to the dedication and resilience of medical professionals.
Overall, “Critical: Between Life and Death” is a must-watch for those interested in medical documentaries. It offers a unique and insightful look into the world of trauma care, making it both an educational and emotionally engaging experience.

With exclusive access and over 40 cameras embedded for 21 days across London’s Major Trauma System, the series shines a spotlight on the intense and often gruesome reality of trauma care. However, it sometimes frames events in an overly dramatic manner, which can detract from the authenticity of the situations. Read The Full Review Here.

Netflix’s new series from the makers of 24 Hours in A&E doesn’t shy away from the grisly reality of London’s major trauma departments. It’s all very slickly done and there are lots of dramatic close-ups of people in scrubs clustered around a patient who’s just arrived by ambulance. However, the series also suffers from the familiar Netflix weakness of needing to hype up events to an even more dramatic level. Read The Full Review Here.

“Critical: Between Life and Death” is an invasive production during pressure-cooker and highly personal medical moments. It offers a profound appreciation for what our public health service has to endure and reveals the grim reality of the more emergency-based aspects of a hospital. This Netflix series reminds me of the equally eye-opening Lenox Hill, which landed on Netflix. Read The Full Review Here.
