BOND 26: Denis Villeneuve Slated to Helm Next James Bond Film for Amazon

James Bond Credits

Denis Villeneuve to Direct Next Bond Picture

Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has been tapped to direct Bond 26, the next chapter in the James Bond series from Amazon.

James Bond film lover and accomplished director, Denis Villeneuve, will be helming the newest movie addition to the Bond franchise. Amazon MGM has entrusted the series to be continued by the highly acclaimed filmmaker, Villeneuve, who has made several undeniably great films over the course of his distinguished career.

Although known more for science fiction projects like Dune, Dune: Part Two, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, he’s certainly likely to be more than capable of taking over directorial duties on the action-heavy franchise which we left in 2021 with No Time to Die. Bond (last played by Daniel Craig), also known as 007, died at the end of that picture, but Villeneuve’s project will likely be casting a fine new actor in the pivotal role of “Bond.”

No Time to Die earned a whopping $160 million domestically and another astonishing $613 internationally which spells out the appeal of James Bond overseas. Even with Bond biting the dust at the end of the 2021 film, audiences still rewarded the film with an “A-” CinemaScore grade.

Denis Villeneuve, a French-Canadian filmmaker, is a force to contend with and has made many different types of films such as Prisoners which starred Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal and the aforementioned science fiction pictures. While his attention to unique details in his pictures is quite impressive, there are many stylistic choices that are staples of the franchise that the director may have to remain faithful to in this new job as director of the latest Bond movie.

Having said that, Amazon MGM should be really excited to have Denis Villeneuve onboard. For one, the superb critical recognition he has received for his work has been enormously enriching to the director’s career. Dune: Part Two made many top 10 lists last year and the filmmaker proved he could add his unique touches to an already established work of fiction.

While the casting of the Bond character and how the filmmakers will incorporate the events of No Time to Die into the franchise are two points that remain to be seen, almost everyone in Hollywood and beyond is excited to see such a proficient filmmaker taking on the role of carrying on a legacy such as Bond which has lived for so many decades in the world of cinema.

Amazon MGM should be considering the upcoming Bond picture to be helmed by Villeneuve as a sure-to-be theatrically released tentpole. This franchise has made so much money that nothing could stop Denis Villeneuve in his tracks. Look for more news on the casting of the project as it develops. Who will follow in the footsteps of greats like Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Craig and Pierce Brosnan? Time will tell.
