Amazon Could Want to Revisit Bull Durham for a New Film

Amazon owns the rights to 1988’s Bull Durham and people may end up seeing Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon together again for a sequel.

Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon would seemingly love to revisit their roles as Crash Davis and Annie Savoy from the baseball drama, Bull Durham. Now that Amazon has the rights to that film, there is the possibility that these two veteran actors could return to the screen in another baseball movie romance. It has been a long time since the original film, directed by Ron Shelton, graced the silver screen. Consequently, Amazon could also go in the other direction and remake the 1988 Costner/Sarandon film instead.

In 1988, Bull Durham was an adult-themed drama with a comic edge that earned a “B+” CinemaScore grade and a terrific $50 million box-office gross. Sarandon met her longtime partner, Tim Robbins, on the set of the film in which all three principal performers earned rave reviews. Costner and Sarandon had great chemistry in the original movie which makes people think they could rekindle that on-screen relationship for a successful follow-up film.

Costner has said he wanted to do another baseball movie and a sequel to the 1988 film would definitely fit the bill. Costner made a few baseball-themed pictures which also included the likes of 1989’s heartfelt, Field of Dreams, and For Love of the Game which came out 10 years later. Costner’s passion for the sport could help fuel the potential project of a sequel to Bull Durham.

Despite an 8-year age difference, Sarandon and Costner sizzled on the screen together with their romance in their old baseball movie. Sarandon’s being slightly older than Costner really doesn’t mean much in today’s show-biz climate, and it would be great to see the pair back on-screen playing opposite one another. Let’s just hope Amazon doesn’t re-cast the roles for a remake instead. If the remake moves forward instead of the sequel, the second Bull Durham project idea would, indeed, be scrapped according to sources.

Tim Robbins has not officially weighed in on the idea of a sequel to the 1988 film yet, although his breakup with Sarandon years ago could be a barrier to him returning in any way, shape or form. Director Shelton may be a part of the sequel if it does, indeed, move ahead further in its development stages.

Let it be said that there is no actual script for a sequel at this time so if the sequel project is approved, the script would have to start the process of being penned. Whatever happens, Costner and Sarandon were solid gold together back then and would almost certainly be wonderful together again in a new Bull Durham project.
