Other than duplicating the historic feat he pulled off in the Paris Olympics, Carlos Yulo has another big wish, hoping to be fulfilled.
“I hope my brother and I can compete as teammates in (the) 2028 (Los Angeles Olympics),” Yulo said in Filipino, referring to Eldrew, who is hands-down the best junior artistic gymnast in the country. “My wish is for us to qualify in the all-around (event).”

The 16-year-old Eldrew has already earned three men’s junior vault medals in the continental championships, the last one a silver recently in the South Korea Asian meet following a gold in the 2024 edition held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and another silver in the 2023 version held in Singapore.
With no local gymnast his age worthy of matching his prowess, Eldrew is now cocooned in a training camp in Japan under celebrated coach Munehiro Kugimiya, Caloy’s former coach, who molded him into an Olympic champion.
“I wish that he could learn more and be safe there in Japan,’’ said Yulo, who will set up a training camp of his own in Japan two to three weeks prior to the World Championships on Oct. 19 to Oct. 25 in Jakarta.

The older Yulo is also going to take part in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, this December.
Carlos recently grabbed a gold medal in the floor exercise and three bronzes in the all-around, vault and parallel bars during the Asian championships in Jecheon, South Korea.
It was the first time the 4-foot-11 dynamo competed internationally nearly eight months after installing himself as the best Filipino Olympian with victories in the floor exercise and vault last year in the Paris Summer Games.

Eldrew has been following his brother’s lead. He was named Olympic Solidarity scholar by the International Olympic Committee for the 2028 LAOlympics during the Olympic Day, organized by the Philippine Olympic Committee in Tagaytay City, on Monday.
“Super happy for him to be an IOC scholar for the next Olympics. I was an IOC scholar, too, back in 2017. That’s where I started,’’ said Carlos of Eldrew.
Since then, Carlos has amassed multiple medals on the world and continental stages following the breakthrough gold in the floor exercise during the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
