‘Chal Mera Putt 4’ Scores Massive USD 1.9 Million Overseas Opening Despite India Ban

The latest installment in the beloved Chal Mera Putt franchise has made a thunderous debut at the overseas Box Office, proving the series’ immense global appeal. The Amrinder Gill starrer, Chal Mera Putt 4, raked in a massive USD 1.90 million (approx. Rs. 16.50 crore) during its opening weekend. This impressive feat was achieved entirely in international markets, as the film is currently barred from release in India due to the inclusion of Pakistani actors in its cast.

This collection positions Chal Mera Putt 4 as the fourth-biggest opening weekend for a Punjabi Cinema film ever, trailing only behind industry titans Jatt and Juliet 3, Sardaar Ji 3, and Carry on Jatta 3.

Dominating The Core Punjabi Markets

While its overall rank is fourth, the film’s performance in the core Punjabi-speaking markets of North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom tells an even stronger story. In these key territories, Chal Mera Putt 4 was second only to Jatt and Juliet 3, outperforming the opening weekends of both Sardaar Ji 3 and Carry on Jatta 3, which had stronger initial numbers in Pakistan and the Middle East.

The film’s territorial breakdown highlights its widespread success, led by Canada (USD 700,000), Australia-NZ (USD 420,000), and the United Kingdom (USD 360,000). The United States also contributed a strong USD 180,000, with Pakistan adding another USD 150,000.

Setting New Benchmarks In The UK

The United Kingdom, in particular, saw a historic run for the film. Chal Mera Putt 4 emerged as the biggest Punjabi opener of all time in the territory with a weekend total of GBP 270K. It not only registered the industry’s best-ever opening day but also became the first Punjabi film to cross the GBP 100K mark on a single day (Saturday). This record-breaking performance underscores the franchise’s deep connection with the diaspora audience in the UK.

Commentary On The India Ban

The film’s phenomenal overseas success is bittersweet, as it highlights a significant loss for domestic exhibitors and audiences. The decision to ban the film in India has been described as “utterly mindless,” with Indian cinemas in Punjab being deprived of a surefire blockbuster when they are starved for hits. While the strong overseas market is large enough to ensure the producers are financially safe, Indian audiences are left waiting indefinitely or are forced to turn to piracy to watch the film. Ironically, while the film is banned in India, it is running successfully in Pakistan, helping bring audiences back to cinemas there.
