The Source of Office Resentment.

CNN staff members are upset about star anchor Kaitlan Collins buying an expensive vacation home on Nantucket island. The purchase has caused tension in the network as many employees are dealing with job cuts and budget reductions. Collins works as both the chief White House correspondent and host of her own primetime show called “The Source with Kaitlan Collins.”

The timing of Collins’ real estate purchase has not gone over well with her colleagues at CNN. Many workers at the network have been affected by layoffs and office changes under the new leadership. The contrast between Collins’ expensive purchase and the financial struggles of other staff members has created workplace tension.

Office gossip suggests that CNN employees are ‘grossed out’ by how much Collins paid for her new property, reflecting broader resentment about celebrity wealth disparities that anger regular workers. One source said, “She just bought some bougie place and CNN people are grossed out that she paid so much.” The same source also claimed that Collins is “way overpaid” for her work at the network.

Collins has two jobs while CNN cuts costs

Collins’ supporters at CNN point out that she handles two major roles at the network. She serves as the chief White House correspondent while also anchoring her own evening news show. This double duty means she has more responsibilities than many other CNN employees.

However, her heavy workload has not made other staff members feel better about the situation. Many CNN workers are still stressed about the changes happening at the network. The company has gone through several rounds of job cuts and office reorganizations since Mark Thompson became chairman and CEO in October 2023.

Thompson made major changes to CNN’s structure after taking over the network. He combined three separate newsrooms into one single newsroom to save money on operating costs. In January, about 200 jobs were eliminated as part of a company reorganization. These cuts have left many remaining employees worried about their job security.

Nantucket is known as an expensive place to buy property. The average house price on the Massachusetts island is around $4 million. The most expensive homes on the island sell for more than $30 million. Many wealthy and famous people own vacation homes there, including Bill Belichick, John Kerry, Dave Portnoy, and Tommy Hilfiger, though expensive celebrity real estate doesn’t always work out.

Collins was previously part of a morning show that did not succeed at CNN. She worked alongside Don Lemon and Poppy Harlow on the breakfast program. The show was started by former CNN boss Chris Licht but was canceled after a difficult run. Collins left the morning show before it was completely scrapped when Thompson took control of the network.

The situation shows the divide between high-paid television personalities and regular network employees. While Collins can afford expensive real estate, many of her colleagues are dealing with job uncertainty and company cost-cutting measures. This contrast has created workplace resentment that continues to affect the CNN newsroom.
