Donald Trump is already threatening Mamdani and he’s not even mayor yet.
Donald Trump has made a not-so-subtle threat towards presumptive Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani. In an interview over the weekend, the president labelled Mamdani a “communist” and even threatened to withhold funds from the city if he didn’t “do the right thing.”
What did Trump say?
During an interview that aired on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, the president labeled Mamdani a “communist”. The mayoral candidate is a self-described socialist who has been very outspoken about making life in his city more affordable. He’s also controversially stated “I don’t think we should have billionaires,” something which has caused a great deal of concern among the uber-rich who live in New York. Clearly his stance has got Trump very worried.
“I used to say, we will never have a socialist in this country, no, but we’ll have a communist. I mean, he’s a communist and going to be mayor of New York.”
The president then went on to try and swing his political weight around and threaten the mayoral candidate ahead of November’s election.
“I think he admits it … If he does get in, I’m gonna be president and he’s gonna have to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money. He’s gotta do the right thing,”
I don’t know about you, but that kind of sounds like something a tyrant might say. If the people choose to elect Mamdani this November then who is Trump to try and undermine that? Or would he try to call voter fraud? It seems to be his go to response when the results of a democratic election don’t pan out in his favor. Let’s face it, Donald Trump is a sore loser.
What did Zohran Mamdani say in response?
On Sunday, Mamdani appeared on NBCs Meet the Press where he was asked about his thoughts on the president’s comments. When asked by host Kristen Welker what his reaction to Trump’s comments was and whether or not he was a communist, Mamdani had a calm and collected response.
“No, I am not. And I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I’m from, who I am, ultimately, because he wants to distract from what I’m fighting for.”
Mamdani’s popularity has upset many Republicans with one cowardly congressman even calling for him to be deported. Anyone who upsets the MAGA crowd this greatly is someone worth supporting. Mamdani has been bashed for his socialist views but also for his stance on Israel which has seen the mayoral candidate repeatedly grilled by his opponents as well as interviewers.
Despite all this, he looks to be the popular choice to win the election come November, but whether he listens to Trump and does the so-called “right thing” will remain to be seen.
