Donald Trump has recently focused his attention on Maryland Governor Wes Moore, making a series of unusual statements about the Democrat. Trump initially made an unprompted public statement that he did not consider the governor to be “presidential timber.” Following this, the former president responded to Moore’s public criticisms by threatening to withdraw federal funding for a Maryland infrastructure project. He also cast doubt on Moore’s military record, despite the fact that the governor is a decorated combat veteran who served in Afghanistan.
Before the Washington Post provided video evidence that these were lies, Trump’s version of the story painted an entirely different picture of the relationship between the two. He claimed that at an Army-Navy game, Moore approached him and initiated a hug and a handshake. According to Trump, “They said, ‘Oh, there’s Gov. Moore, he’d love to see you.’ He came over to me, he hugged me, he shook my hand… He said, ‘Sir, you’re the greatest president in my lifetime.’ I said, ‘It’s really nice that you say that. I’d love you to say it publicly, but I don’t think you can do that.’”
Unsurprisingly, Moore quickly dismissed the story. He told WBAL Radio, “I’m a person who takes my integrity very seriously, and I spent the past six months before that election campaigning as to why I did not think that he should be the next president of the United States. So when I say that conversation never happened, that imaginary conversation never happened, I mean that conversation never happened.”
Trump is caught lying again
Supporting Moore’s account was objective video evidence. A film crew for a documentary series on Fox Nation captured the actual interaction between Trump and Moore at the game. Footage aired by Fox News showed the two men shaking hands. The clip revealed that Moore engaged Trump in a brief discussion about the rebuilding of the Key Bridge in Baltimore.
Moore’s remarks focused on the potential for federal funding and the possibility of completing the bridge’s reconstruction during a future Trump administration. Moore’s spokesperson confirmed that this brief, recorded exchange was the only time the two men met on that particular day. The video documentation directly contradicted Trump’s detailed story of a private conversation filled with lavish praise.
The manufactured conversation with Governor Moore is part of a broader, well-documented pattern. Trump has a history of lying about meetings and discussions that appear to exist only in his mind. For instance, he once claimed that “they call me the president of Europe,” a title that no one has used.
On another occasion, he claimed to have stopped a number of wars, first stating the number was seven, then revising it to ten. Another notable incident involved his apparent surprise at the appointment of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, even though Trump himself was the one who appointed Powell.
This pattern of bizarre and uncorroborated claims has been observed in other situations as well. At a press conference at a detention facility in Florida known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” Trump was asked about the expected length of time detainees would be held. His response was a non sequitur about his love for the state and how he planned to spend a lot of time there. He seemed unfazed by the lack of connection between the question and his answer.
