Future of ‘Pineapple Express’ Sequel in Doubt as Rogen Reflects on Failed Plans

Seth Rogen Pineapple Express Movie News

Seth Rogen recently sat down for an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, when host Andy Cohen asked a question from a viewer about the possibility of a sequel to his stoner classic hit, Pineapple Express (2008).

Rogen starred in the original film alongside (past) frequent collaborator James Franco and also co-wrote the script with creative partner Evan Goldberg. With David Gordon Green taking over directing duties and Judd Apatow producing, Pineapple Express went on to become a beloved comedy film for an entire generation.

Unfortunately, Rogen wasn’t so quick to confirm the possibility of a sequel. “Maybe,” Rogen continued (with a slightly cynical jab,) “we can probably sell it to streaming or something.” Cohen, playing to the fans, told Rogen about the “big demand” for a sequel from fans and Rogen added, “There could be. You never know. I don’t know. I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day.”

Rogen had actually tried to make a sequel in the past until funding fell through from Sony. In 2020 Rogen spoke on the sequel that never was on The Howard Stern Show, “Thanks to the Sony hack, you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it. It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it.”

The idea of a sequel is harder to imagine in light of the allegations made against James Franco beginning in 2018. In June 2021, Franco settled a class-action sexual misconduct lawsuit filed against him by former students in his acting class for $2.235 million. While coming to his defense at first, Rogen has since distanced himself from Franco.

The two actors got their start alongside one another in Judd Apatow’s cult classic television show Freaks and Geeks, but in 2021, Rogen told The Times, “I also look back to that interview in 2018 where I comment that I would keep working with James, and the truth is that I have not and I do not plan to right now.”

Franco sat down with Variety in 2024 and further confirmed the end to their friendship, “No. I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth; we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over.”
