Horror Films WEAPONS and SINNERS Set to Get Oscar Campaigns from Warner Bros.

Sinners and Weapons May Be Heading to The Oscars

Sinners and Weapons seem poised for Oscar-nomination glory and their studio, Warner Bros., has decided to push both horror films for Academy Award nominations.

Sinners and Weapons were two of the best horror films in recent memory so it is only appropriate that both films are being groomed for award nominations. As far as Sinners is concerned, it’s one of my ten best for 2025, hands down, and is certain to make many critics’ top ten lists come year’s end. In my review from this past April, I cited Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo’s excellent work as at the level it needs to be to deserve major accolades.

Let’s talk about Amy Madigan who plays Aunt Gladys in the fantastic recent horror picture, Weapons. Here is a terrific character actress who all but disappeared from cinematic view for a while only to resurface in what is, perhaps, one of the creepiest roles of all time. Madigan was cited as deserving of an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in my recent review of Weapons, and now, the film’s studio will be pushing for the movie (and Madigan) to get major nods during awards season. If Madigan gets in, it could lead to a victory for the long-time distinguished actress who never really got the respect she truly deserved.

There are so many great things about Weapons and Sinners. While I think she’s damn good, Julia Garner may face an uphill battle getting a nod for Best Actress, though. That trophy already seems to be going to Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, but thanks to the brilliant script for Weapons (which could get Oscar-nominated), Garner could sneak in the back door to landing a nomination. Garner’s work was strong and the actress is long overdue for awards glory.

In a less crowded Best Supporting Actor field, Delroy Lindo could make the mark for his remarkable turn in Sinners. Ditto Josh Brolin for his fascinating supporting work in Weapons. Michael B. Jordan seems almost assured a nod for Sinners for his leading dual role within the complex horror film and though his female co-star, Hailee Steinfeld, is also deserving, that happening as well will ultimately depend on how strong the marketing push is to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from Warner Bros.

Weapons was designed like the Oscar-nominated script for 1999’s Magnolia. Sinners was also brilliantly constructed from a cinematic standpoint. Both of these films were so well-written, the question soon becomes how could Oscar not nominate these screenplays, and if the scripts, themselves, get nominated, the films are that much closer to securing Best Picture nods as well which would put two horror films in that very competitive race. Sinners may be the one that stands a real chance at securing the Best Picture trophy even though it would compete with One Battle After Another from Paul Thomas Anderson, the writer of Magnolia which inspired Weapons. It’s been a while since we had two Oscar-nominated horror films in the same year. Wait, did it ever happen? Should it happen this year? Tell us your thoughts!
