Chamkila Director Returns With Untitled Love Story Set in 1940s Punjab
Imtiaz Ali is back in the director’s chair after picking up critical acclaim for Chamkila in 2024 with another well-crafted dramatic film with an emotional core. His next film stars the emerging stars Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh, and it is a period romance set during the tumultuous years surrounding the Partition of India in the 1940s.
Sources say that the untitled film will begin shooting in August 2025, and it will also feature veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah in a significant role.
Love In The Time Of Displacement: Vedang Raina & Sharvari’s Emotional Journey
In true Imtiaz Ali style, the film deals with two young lovers whose lives are ripped apart by circumstance and the chaos of Partition. Acting alongside Vedang (who really impressed during his debut) and Sharvari (who is quickly finding the spotlight after being cast in some very well-made dramatic roles), this movie promises to engage an audience with the emotional journey of the characters, love, loss and longing.
An insider close to the project said:
“Located in 1940s Punjab, the film explores Partition and its aftermath from the intimate perspective of young love. Imtiaz has a story that flows over generations but never loses its cemented emotional core.”
The Borderless Period Drama? — And No Pakistan
Interestingly, though the film is about Partition, it won’t show Pakistan but makes only passing references to it. Imtiaz’s aim is, apparently, to think about human feeling, migration, and identity, not political borders.
Designer Sheetal Sharma, who conceived of the textured looks for Chamkila, will also be styling the film’s vintage style — look tests are already completed for Vedang and Sharvari. The film is expected to span different generations of families, and reportedly, Imtiaz is speaking with two more leading ladies for key supporting roles.
Another credibility boost will come from Naseeruddin Shah in the ensemble, as strong talent always equates the ensemble with high credibility. Although the film is still not officially titled, trade sources claim it will follow a multi-timeline approach (that Imtiaz has explored previously with Tamasha and Love Aaj Kal).
Partition Stories Are Rising Again
At a time when Partition-era stories are buzzing with excitement, already with the likes of Sunny Deol‘s Lahore 1947, produced by Aamir Khan, Imtiaz’s film deals with the same historical moment, but while Lahore 1947 is based on a play by Asghar Wajahat, Imtiaz’s film is based on an original screenplay and has a very personal quality typical of Imtiaz’s films.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Imtiaz Ali’s interpretation of a Partition-era love story is not just an interpretation of a historical period drama — it is a poetic plunge into emotional displacement and the consistency of love in times of compulsion. With a new pairing of Vedang Raina and Sharvari, the soulful feeling of Naseeruddin Shah, and Imtiaz’s unique storytelling skill with romance, Imtiaz’s untitled film is potentially one of the most emotionally impactful films we can expect in 2026.
