Irish horror ‘The Morrigan’ among 31 world premieres at Galway Film Fleadh | News

RE-CREATION

Irish director Colum Eastwood’s horror film The Morrigan and Mark Forbes’ class divide documentary Quiet On Set  are among the films set to world premiere at the 37th edition of Galway Film Fleadh, taking place from July 8-13 in Ireland.

Quiet On Set explores class division in the UK film industry and features actors Maxine Peake and Vicky McClure, writer Paul Laverty and filmmakers Sean McAllister and Kolton Lee.

The Morrigan follows an archaeologist who unearths a burial casket of a mummified figure and unleashes an ancient evil upon her team. The cast includes Saffron Burrows, James Cosmo, Toby Stephens and Antonia Campbell-Hughes.

Galway is opening with Jim Sheridan and David Merriman’s Re-Creation starring Vicky Krieps, which is based on the infamous unsolved murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan Du Plantier in west Cork.

Mike Flanagan’s Toronto award-winner The Life Of Chuck closes the festival.

There are 31 features world premiering at the festival. Further titles include Gabrielle Russell’s The Reckoning Of Erin Morrigan, about a former IRA operative, and documentary Gerry Adams: A Ballympurhy Man.

Among the Irish-language world premieres are Ruán Magan’s Baite, about the discovery of a body in a rural village, and Lance Daly’s Trad about a gifted young fiddle player.

The world cinema competition, with a prize fund of €3,000, features Gabriel Mascaro’s Berlin Silver Bear jury prize winner The Blue Trail; Chun-Teng’s Taiwanese drama Eel; and Mathijs Poppe’s IDFA premiere The Jacket.

The Galway Film Fair includes a masterclass from The Apprentice director Ali Abbasi while US producer Christine Vachon will deliver the keynote speech as part of the festival’s industry strand, Fleadh Forum.
