Lebanon fearful of being drawn into Iran-Israel war

Lebanon on Sunday expressed concerns about it becoming involved in the war between Israel, the US and Iran.

Lebanon must not allow itself to be dragged into the ongoing regional confrontation, stressed Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, writing on X after the US joined Israel in attacking Iranian nuclear facilities overnight.

“Our awareness of our supreme national interest is our most powerful weapon in these delicate circumstances,” Salam said.

In the course of the Gaza war last year, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon also went to war with Israel.

A ceasefire between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah has been in place since the end of November, with both sides accusing the other of violations.

The Israeli air force continues to attack Lebanon almost daily.

Since the outbreak of the latest conflict between Israel and Iran, fears have grown in Lebanon that Hezbollah could join as an ally of Iran.

However, the Shiite militia is considered to be significantly weakened since its own war with Israel.
