Meet the City Council Candidates for District 30 in Queens

Through our new video series, Reel Talk, we have introduced you to the City Council candidates for the upcoming New York City Primary Election. Before early voting begins on June 14th, here’s one last chance to get to know the people on your ballot.

Queens’ District 30 includes Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ridgewood, Woodhaven, and Woodside. It is currently represented by Council Member Robert Holden.  There are three Democrats running to replace him: Paul Pogozelski, Dermot Smyth and Phil Wong. The winner will face off against Republican candidate Alicia Vaichunas in November.

Paul Pogozelski

A resident of Middle Village, Pogozelski owned a business in the area for more than 20 years, and he wants to improve public safety, increase the prevailing wage for FDNY, NYPD and EMS workers in the District, and improve education through smaller class sizes.

Dermot Smyth

Having worked as a political leader with the United Federation of Teachers for the past sixteen years, Smyth is ready to bring his experience and relationships to work for the constituents of the District. His priorities include safe streets, clean parks, and fully-funded schools.

Alicia Vaichunas

Vaichunas is a lifelong resident of District 30, and worked as deputy staff for Council Member Robert Holden. She wants common sense solutions for issues such as affordability, safety, and quality of life.
