Through our new video series, Reel Talk, we have introduced you to the City Council candidates for the upcoming New York City Primary Election. Before early voting begins on June 14th, here’s one last chance to get to know the people on your ballot.
Queens’ District 28 includes Jamaica, Richmond Hill, Rochdale Village, and South Ozone Park. The District is currently represented by Adrienne Adams, who is term limited and is now running to be the Democratic nominee for NYC mayor. There are five Democrats running: Ty Hankerson, Romeo Hitlall, Latoya LeGrand, Japneet Singh, and Ruben Wills. Republican candidate Constance Miller has terminated her campaign, leaving only Democratic candidates in the race.
Ty Hankerson
Hankerson knows his community well: he has lived in every neighborhood in the District, and served as a staffer to the current City Council Member. He wants to protect immigrant families and homeowners, ensure decent public transportation, and fully fund public schools.
Romeo Hitlall
Hitlall wants to put people above politics, and lower the cost of living. He plans to crack down on crime, fully-fund public schools, and invest in responsible development.
Latoya LeGrand
LeGrand is running because her District needs leadership they can trust, and leadership that will advocate for the community’s needs.
Japneet Singh
Japneet is a Queens native who has dedicated his career to working with local nonprofits in Queens, focusing on interfaith and community outreach. Most recently, he served as a special assistant in the office of New York Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
Ruben Wills
Wills formerly served as the City Council Member for District 28 from 2011 through 2017; his term ended when he was arrested on charges for which he has since been fully exonerated. He is committed to community development, affordable housing, education and youth empowerment, public safety, and healthcare access.

General Election Day: Tuesday, November 4
