Movie Legend Michael Douglas Not Planning on Returning to the Screen Anytime Soon

Michael Douglas is Stepping Away from Cinema…For Now

Amidst his recent battles with cancer, screen veteran Michael Douglas has decided he won’t be coming back to movies unless something “special” came up.

Michael Douglas has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Oscar-winning Jack Nicholson/Milos Forman movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Douglas produced that successful 1975 hit movie which was one of the most groundbreaking movies of its time. When the subject of Douglas coming back to the movies arose at a recent screening of Cuckoo’s Nest, Douglas pretty much told people he wouldn’t be making a return to the screen unless it was a very “special” situation.

Douglas’s significant other is Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago), another Oscar-winning performer like Douglas himself. Douglas took home his acting trophy for his work in the 1987 Oliver Stone film, Wall Street. Douglas’ dad, Kirk, died at 103-years old. Michael Douglas is currently 80-years old and has a solid body of acclaimed work that has followed him for many years. He was most prominently featured in movies back in the 1980’s and 1990’s when he made box-office hits like Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct and the dark comedy, The War of the Roses, which is actually getting a remake that is due out later this year.

In the dramatic thriller, Falling Down from 1993, Douglas seized the career-defining role of a man fed up with the system and turned it into a truly groundbreaking picture that still holds up today. In 2006’s You, Me and Dupree, Douglas proved he could do lighter comedies as well as heavy dramas and thrillers to an almost equal degree of success.

While Douglas has a wide range of diverse performances that include 1995’s The American President and 2000’s Traffic, the actor’s battles with cancer has made him more aware of the fact that he needs to pay attention to his health which is at least partially related to the fact that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at one point. While not wanting to die on the set at work, he now feels like he can actually take a step back to accommodate his current age and health status.

It is true that Michael Douglas hasn’t worked in a few years so although he has not yet officially retired, it seems as if he’s probably hanging up his hat, so to say, where film acting is concerned. At least for now, that is. There’s no doubt that if the aforementioned “special” project Douglas spoke of arose, the actor could find himself back in the limelight for one last hurrah. If that “special” film or TV show came into fruition, it could be an exception to his rules which kind of suggest Douglas is actually in that comfortable place known by many as “retirement.”
