Oscar May Be Calling Paul Thomas Anderson and Co. If Early Social Media Reactions Are Correct

Leonardo Dicaprio One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson Could Be Going Back to the Oscars

One Battle After Another, has received terrific praise from early social media reactions and some great feedback from the one and only Steven Spielberg.

You can count on filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson showing up at the Oscars next year for his work on the nearly three-hours long, One Battle After Another, if the early social medial response is accurate. Though Leonardo DiCaprio is the film’s star, there are two other co-stars who seem to be singled out constantly in terms of giving the “best” performances in the film: Sean Penn and Chase Infiniti. After reading quite a few social media posts from reviewers who have seen the film, it has become clear that One Battle After Another is Oscar bait of the highest order.

Let’s not forget the response to the new Anderson film by the legendary filmmaker, Steven Spielberg, who thought the movie was “insane,” but in the best way possible. Spielberg really warmed up to the filmmaking style of Anderson who has yet to win an Oscar after making masterpieces like Magnolia, There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread.

DiCaprio has stated in an interview that he would have worked with Anderson on pretty much anything, but the fact that the latest work from the directing legend is being received so well is like icing on the cake. Sean Penn has been in the background these days in terms of major performances and his best recent movies, Flag Day and Daddio, flew completely under the radar. So, it’s with great excitement to announce that Penn could make an unprecedented comeback with an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor for his work in One Battle After Another.

Chase Infiniti is said to be the new Anderson film’s VIP and given the potency of the work, she could make it into the Oscar race as well. Benicio del Toro also has some strong scenes in the new picture as well, according to early reports, although the fact that he has already won Best Supporting Actor (for Traffic) could make that trophy Penn’s to fight for rather than del Toro’s.

Anderson stated that one of his inspirations for One Battle After Another was Running on Empty, one of the best dramatic films of the late 1980’s. Of course, Anderson combines the drama of that film with a few other plot threads (apparently compared to work from the incomparable Stanley Kubrick) mixed in to come up with a completely original new work that has “Best Picture” written all over it. If this movie feels like “the one” for Anderson and company, chalk it up to DiCaprio’s presence as he helped lead Marty Scorsese to his directing Oscar for the hit, The Departed. It could happen this time for Anderson who could ultimately take home the gold for Best Director. Warner Bros. appears to have a winner on its hand with Anderson’s latest.
