Harry needs to be the bigger person.

The late Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary has torn into Prince Harry for constantly portraying himself as “the victim.” She claims his approach is not helping him win over the public who are apparently tired of hearing about “how awful his life is.”

Ailsa Anderson, who worked as Queen Elizabeth II’s press secretary for 12 years between 2001 and 2013, offered a scathing takedown of the prince’s “woe is me” attitude. Speaking on the Channel 5 documentary, Prince Harry: My Terrible Year, Anderson gave some brutal advice while also criticizing the prince for being “too impulsive.”

Prince Harry needs to “stop being the victim”

According to Anderson, Harry needs to change his attitude as the public simply don’t want to hear it anymore.

“Stop being the victim and start being the hero of the piece, start writing your own script. I think people are just getting a little bit tired of how Prince Harry thinks the world is against him and how awful his life is.”

She raises a good point, the narrative that Harry is a victim of the world hasn’t exactly done him any favors. His memoir Spare didn’t get the best reception and it seems as though people in general aren’t on board with the idea that Harry is the victim and the royal family are the bad guys. He gets more favorable attention when he’s doing charity work and keeping away from drama involving his family.

Is reconciliation possible?

With regards to the potential reconciliation that Harry is hoping for, Anderson believes that if King Charles and Prince Wiliam to allow Harry back into the royal fold “private information would then be leaked.” The royal family have been somewhat wary when it comes to trusting Harry as he has spoken to the press about private matters on numerous occasions. It’s also still not clear who leaked the news about Harry and Charles’ peace negotiations, although Harry denies being the one to leak said information.

Despite this, Anderson maintains that Harry is a “very warm, engaging and kind person” but he has lost his way. Other experts in the documentary claim that Harry’s ego is getting in the way of reconciliation with his family. Psychotherapist Emma Reed Turrell stated that “Reconciliation is absolutely possible with moments of accountability and responsibility on both sides.” She went on to advise Harry to “stick a pin” in his ego and focus on being in a relationship rather than being right.

Harry may believe that he has been deeply wronged by his family, but if he wants reconciliation he may have to let go of the notion that he is the victim in this sorry tale. Both sides may have to take some accountability here and both sides will have to forgive.
